Digital Theatre FAQs
Why is SATCo doing digitally-performed theatre and radio plays?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SATCo has moved online in order to continue giving students opportunity to perform and create while staying safe.
What is a radio play?
A radio play, in the context for SATCo, is a play that is performed entirely through sound. The performances of the actors are pre-recorded, mixed with the sound design for the show, and then streamed online to a live audience. Often, these radio plays are combined with sketches of costumes or set designs to help flesh out the worlds of the plays. This lets us give lots of people opportunities to use the skills they have learned in classes while still moving at the rapid pace that SATCo is known for and producing work that is engaging for our audience.
How does the use of radio plays affect the season?
Because radio plays do not require a physical space in the Phoenix Building, we are able to stretch the SATCo season out across more of the semester. This helps to lighten the burden on artists as well as our board, as we learn the new skills required to make radio plays come to life. It also means that we can provide shows throughout more of the semester, rather than having them all squished together into a couple of short weeks
What else is SATCo doing during Covid-19?
Rather than restrict ourselves to the medium of radio plays, we have opened up our submissions to any type of digital theatre from social media plays, to staged readings, to puppet shows. This will let us maintain a diverse season and allows for lots of creative opportunities for students. We are also still running SATCo events which can be found online through our social media.
Where can I find these online plays?
Our radio plays are streamed live, usually on Zoom. The reason we do this is to try and preserve the communal experience of theatre that we would normally have during an in-person season.
